From 2025 onwards, Hailsham Queers (in collaboration with Eastbourne Transgender Association) have been quietly working on human rights issues.
The research and correspondence involved have taken an enormous amount of time and energy, so we've chosen to make some of our work public with the intention that others can benefit from it.

Wealden Green Party
In the runup to the May 2026 local elections, almost all of the electoral wards in Hailsham were predicted to have sweeping Reform UK wins. We wrote to the Wealden Green Party for help, hoping for better engagement with campaigning in the area. The letter, and resulting correspondence chain, are included here.
Dame Nia Griffith NBE (Parliamentary Under Secretary of State; Minister for Equalities)
Following on from our letter to the Wealden MP, we received a response from Dame Griffith. We chose to take the opportunity for open dialogue with a key government official involved in the review of the EHRC Code of Practice, and replied with a further letter CCd to both the Wealden MP and Bridgit Phillipson, the Minister for Women and Equalities.
Nusrat Ghani (MP for Wealden)
After our friends at ETA successfully obtained a meeting with the Eastbourne MP, we decided to write to the Wealden MP. Whilst Nusrat was not able to help in her capacity as MP due to conflicts in her position as Deputy Speaker, she did pass along our letter to the office of the Minister for Equalities.
Josh Babarinde OBE (MP for Eastbourne)
After the Supreme Court ruling in April, ETA started getting reports from their members of a sharp increase in transphobia across Eastbourne. One of their founders decided to write to the Eastbourne MP on behalf of ETA, which was followed by an in-person meeting between Josh, two representatives from Eastbourne Borough Council, and a variety of ETA and HQ members.
CC Jo Shiner KPM (Head of Sussex Police)
After a series of ongoing issues involving the handling of trans+ hate crime and some teething troubles with the role of the newly-created LGBT+ Liaison Officer, the founders of ETA and HQ both collaborated on a letter to the head of Sussex Police. Since then, we have been in regular contact with the officer in charge of hate crimes across Eastbourne and are working with them to make improvements.
Venue (location redacted)
After an incident involving trans+ exclusion at an Eastbourne venue, a series of emails were exchanged. Our joint official letter, sent in an effort to clarify and repair the situation, has been shared PURELY for informational purposes!
Note that the information contained within it was correct at the time of writing, and may no longer reflect the current legal situation.
